Richard, usually known as Dick, was born in Bristol in 1946 and is married to Dee, they have four children. When he left school at sixteen he undertook a five year apprenticeship in Lithographic Printing at Mardon, Son and Hall, which he completed in 1968. Two years later he left the printing industry and retrained as an art teacher at Redland College where he gained a B. Ed. He has taught art in Bristol schools for 29 years and has been Head of Department at his alma mater, St. Mary Redcliffe and Temple School for 10 years.
