Not a professional artist in the strict sense of the word, but a very fine artist who subordinated his painting to his career. He was born in Bristol in 1868 and attended North St. Weslyan School, since demolished. After the usual period of training, he obtained the Queen`s Prize for Architecture and also gained his Art Master`s Certificate. He next took up his post as Headmaster, of all places, at his old school in Stokes Croft, a post he held for thirty years. During the Boer War he served as a sergeant in the Bristol Volunteers. In January 1907 he was elected an Artist Member and for the next 49 years he as a regular attender at the Wigwam, in evidence of which the club possesses about fifty of his Evening Sketches. He had a habit of escorting parties of school children around the Art Gallery and lecturing them on Art Appreciation. He was a keen churchgoer at Cotham Methodist Church and sang in their choir for 51 years. During the 1914 18 War he again served with the Bristol Volunteers. After the War he became Headmaster of Castle School, also now demolished. He made frequent contributions to `Grouse`. He exhibited periodically at the Annual Exhibition and contributed to the Bongie Portfolio. When he was eighty eight he gave up attending and was made a Life Member. In July 1960 he died aged 92.
