David Blake was born in Hereford in 1944. He began his art studies at the West of England College of Art, and then served an apprenticeship at the studio of Mardon, Son and Hall where he met Brother Savage Frank Shipsides. He was elected an Artist Member of the Bristol Savages in 1971. He later went freelance, and worked mainly in watercolours, specialising in cat studies and small mammals. His work is known for the granular effects he produced in his backgrounds, and the masterly way he could paint fur. Later his career moved in a different direction: he began producing backgrounds for cartoons. He worked for both the TV and film industries, in this country and abroad, including Hollywood, but his promising career was cut short by his sudden death at the age of 48 on the 31st. March 1992.
