An architect by profession, he was born in London on October 10th, 1905 and came to live at Keynsham in the late 1920`s where he was engaged in the building of J. S. Fry & Sons` factory at Somerdale. Later he came to live at Kent Road. Bishopston. Record has it that around 1928 he decided to devote his attention to painting and he quickly made his mark as a painter in oils and water colours, specialising in poster work. He was elected an Artist Member in 1930 but his stay with us was of very short duration, for at the end of that year, he left Bristol and moved to London. Here he took up an appointment with Wallis, Gilbert & Partners, Architects, specialising in the building of factories. He did however, write to the Tribe expressing his desire to retain his membership and this he did until 1934, and he contributed to our Exhibition in 1932. In 1934 he gained some fame when his poster design was accepted by the Great Western Railway Co. This was the poster which received considerable public acclaim for the painting of Buckfast Abbey embodied in it. About this time he was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours. He later left London and went to live near Andover in Hampshire and in 1964 was elected a member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists. (Cecil Broome)
