Born in Cardiff 1869. His father was Headmaster of Cardiff School of Science and Art. He studied at the Royal College of Art and in 1893 won the British Institute Scholarship for Engineering with a travelling scholarship which took him to Paris and Italy. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and at Galleries in the following centres: London, Paris, Rome, Chicago, St Louis, Los Angeles and Japan. In 1898 he was elected Associate of the Royal Society of Painter, Etchers and Engravers. Came to Bristol in 1895 to take up the post of Principal of the Bristol Municipal School of Art which he occupied for 39 years, and taught many of his future Brother Savages. In 1911 he became an Artist Member of the Tribe. He was a regular member of the Tribe for over 30 years, a genial figure with a beard and a commanding appearance. He was an active fisherman and was keen on all forms of sport, especially Rugby as his brother was a famous Rugby International. We have an evening sketch of him by Charlie Thomas with his dog and a fishing rod entitled A good old sport. In 1950 he left Bristol to live in London and died in 1956 aged 87. (Cecil Broome)
