FABIAN, Ernest F., RWA. PDF Print E-mail
Elected an honorary member in 1908, he lived at Downs Park East and although he was an artist he is chiefly remembered for his modelling. For thirty seven years he was modelling master at the Municipal School of Art, Queen`s Rd., but was compelled to retire in 1929 due to ill health. He was a frequent visitor to the Wigwam and, from a caricature by Charlie Thomas, appears to have been a tall handsome man with a thick crop of hair and a moustache. He exhibited regularly at the RWA and was commissioned to make a bronze model of Ernest Board`s “Sailing of Cabot” for the gallery in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Some of his models and busts are to be seen in Bristol Cathedral. He has also left the tribe several examples of his skill, notably the beautiful President`s Chain of Office. The same year he was honoured with Life Membership. In 1912 he made and presented the Savages` Golf Trophy and also contributed to the Bongie Portfolio with a classically designed plaque. He also made for us a plaster model of a rugby player about to ground the ball for a try while in the embrace of an opponent’s tackle. In April 1931 he died after a long illness. (Cecil Broome)
