Alexander Hardie, known as Sandy, was a Scotsman who came to Bristol to work and lived at first in Parry`s Lane. In 1963 he became Principal of the College of Technology in Bristol. In 1964 he was elected an Artist Member of Bristol Savages and in 1966 he was appointed Pro Vice Chancellor of the University of Bath. During this time at Bath he held a one-man exhibition, and also painted a portrait of the first Vice Chancellor, Dr. George Moore, also a Brother Savage. At that time the Senior Common Room was also enhanced by several of his paintings including that portrait. He exhibited at the Savages` annual exhibitions from 1964 to 1976, painting many Scottish landscapes mainly of the Ross area, some flower painting and a few portraits. He also exhibited at the RWA and became a full member of the Academy. In 1975 he became Professor of Physics at Bath University. In August 1977 he returned to Scotland to live in the village of Cromarty near the Moray Firth where he died in 1989. (R.S.B)
