Bernard Hawkins was born in Tooting, South London on the 19th January 1940. He studied art at the London College of Painting and Arts. He then took a position at the London Studio of Ford`s Advertising, later transferring to their thriving studio in Bristol. It was here that he met five of the Savage Artists, including the studio manager, Dennis Lewis. They soon introduced him to the Savages and in 1974 he applied and was elected an Artist Member. He exhibited in the Annual Exhibition from 1975 to 1996. He was an artist always searching for something different, something new, a new style, approach or technique. He was also very much a craftsman, he restored clocks and made musical instruments including guitars. In 1998 he moved to Poole in Dorset where he began a new business restoring and renovating old fountain pens for the antiques trade. He also designed and made pens for the very exclusive collectors` market. (R.S.B)
