Born in 1876 he came to Bristol as an officer in HM Customs Service and lived in Fishponds. He was elected an Artist Member in 1915 and was very active in the studio. Never a robust type, he was tall, lean and clean shaven and with a thick crop of black hair. The sad expression he wore on his face was due possibly to his failing health. He was shy and retiring by nature. Shortly after his entry to the Tribe his ill health caused him to retired from the Service. This enabled him to pursue his hobby to the full and he soon became a very fine painter and etcher, so much so that some of his etching plates were acquired by Bristol Municipal Art Gallery. In 1922 he was nominated as President and in spite of his self-effacing manner he conducted the Tribe`s affairs with considerable success. He contributed to Grouse and left us two excellent self portraits. His work in the studio extended over 20 years. In November 1936 he died at his home aged 60. (Cecil Broome)
