Harold Holden was born in Settle, Yorkshire in 1885. His art studies began at the Skipton School of Art , continued at the Leeds College of Art, and finally finished at the prestigious Royal College of Art London. He then began a career as an art teacher, becoming principal at the Cheltenham School of Art. Later returning to the Leeds College of Art, where he had been a student, to become its Principal. He subsequently moved to Birmingham and became Director of Art Education for Birmingham, and Principal of Birmingham College of Art. He specialised in watercolours and exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Royal Watercolour Society where he became an Associate Member. His works are in permanent collections in Cheltenham, Leeds, Birmingham, Brierley Hill, and Chicago. In 1960 he was made an Honorary Member of the Bristol Savages. (R.S.B)
