Robert Ayton, usually known as Bob, was elected as an artist member of the Bristol Savages in 1980. He was a great draughtsman and a fine illustrator. He illustrated the strip feature ‘Jack O’ Lantern’ for the now collectable Eagle comic. Over many years he illustrated a whole series of children`s books for the publishers Ladybird Books Ltd., as well as illustrating for the BBC at Whiteladies Road. He was also a part time teacher of illustration at the West of England College of Art. Bob lived and worked in a large farmhouse just outside Backwell. (R.S.B)
