JOYNSON Derek PDF Print E-mail
Derek Joynson was born in Bristol in 1936. He studied at the West of England College of Art. He then served an apprenticeship at the studio of E. S. & A. Robinson under Ernest Andrews. He moved to Fry’s, the chocolate manufacturer who had their own studio at Keynsham. When Fry’s moved their studio to Bourneville in the Midlands, Derek took a position with Mardon Son and Hall. He was elected an Artist Member of the Savages in 1977. He painted mainly in gouache and oils and exhibited in the annual exhibition from 1977 – 1984. He was a fine figure and portrait painter but also painted landscapes that invariably contained a figure or two. We have two of his paintings, one a landscape, the other a conversation piece that depicts the artists painting in the studio on a Wednesday evening. This painting hangs proudly in the studio it portrays. (R.S.B)
