John Maggs was a Bristol Savage for nearly forty years. Creative to the core in all walks of life from art and architecture to the practicalities of lecturing, gardening and building; all with an enigmatic air and sense of magic. In painting, images were resolved into a distinctive purity and clarity disciplined by the use of a very restricted palette. His extensive, continued studies made him fluent in the language of design. On the one hand he was a scholar, passionate about the Medieval era; on the other, never reluctant to use new techniques to good effect in architecture.
