Born in Huddersfield on May 19th, 1898, the son of James H. Milner, also an artist. He studied at the Camberwell School of Arts & Crafts and at the Royal College of Art. where he received his diploma in 1921. He came to Bristol in 1937 to take up his post as Principal of the West of England College of Art and automatically emulated his predecessor by becoming a Member of the Tribe. He did, however, mention that his teaching commitments would preclude his regular attendance at our weekly meetings, but he always maintained a keen interest in the Tribe. and exhibited at several of our Annual Exhibitions. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy (1937 and 1938) the R. W. A. and the New English Art Club, and he has works in public collections at Newcastle, Brighton, Eastbourne, Cheltenham and Bristol. He was a painter in oils and watercolour, a designer of stained glass windows, examples of which are at the Assize Courts and the University of Bristol. He was also a typographic designer, and produced designs for the Bibliographical Society, Sidgewich and Jackson, and the Kynoch Press. Our records show that he was also a member of the Savage Squad of the Royal Observer Corps under the command of B/S. Ernie Esbester. Later he moved to live at Wootton-under Edge and in April 1947 he resigned his membership. In 1975 he was elected President of the R.W.A. (Cecil Broome)
